Last week we learned about the life cycle of a butterfly. I ordered some butterfly eggs and we watched them grow! The company sends a tub of caterpillars in food. They eat and eat until they can't eat anymore. Then they crawl up to the top of the tub and attach themselves to the paper lining (sort of like a coffee filter) and turn into a chrysalis. I takes about 1 week for the caterpillar to turn to a chrysalis. Then it takes about 1 more week to turn into a butterfly. We had 5 all together. When I left today, we still had one more left that needed to hatch. It is a really cool thing to do with young kids! They love it.

5 chrysalis' (Notice the detail in them. They are so cool!)

And voila, we have a painted lady butterfly. Notice the blood near the empty chrysalis in the back of the picture. The kids freaked out when they saw the blood.
