On Monday, your child will come home with a manilla envelope. It houses two things. A leveled reading book (photocopied) and sight words (on a ring). The book and word ring are to be part of the 10 minutes of recommended reading. Or, you can have your child read more than 10 minutes (if you want!) On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday I will have a parent volunteer listen to your child read the story. If they can read the story 95% correct, they will get a new book on that same level. I have tested each child to see what level they are currently on. They will begin bringing home books on that level and progress as time goes on. Once they have read 5 books at 95% accuracy at their current level, they will move up to the next level.
The end of the first nine weeks goal is to be reading a level D book. The ultimate goal is to be reading a level J by the end of first grade. Once your child reaches level J, I will continue to send books home to enrich them. (Why stop... they will be a much better reader when they are in second grade!)
This envelope needs to come back to school with your child each day. I will not send it home on Friday's, because there should be no homework over the weekend! It will go home again on Monday night.
The word rings start out with Kindergarten words and progress to all of the first grade words. There are 124 words that your child must know in first grade. Once they know all of them, I will continue to enrich them with second and third grade words. (Why stop...right!) The parent volunteer will also check the word cards. When your child reads the words correctly, they will receive a star on the card. The goal is to have 6 stars on each card. Once there are 6 stars on that card, a new one will be added. Please don't write stars on the cards at home! Just sign the front of the envelope stating that you listened to them read and do their cards. My goal is to have your child knowing all first grade words by Christmas break!!!!
I hope this doesn't confuse you! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
